Dreaming about a trip to Italy or planning a holiday in Umbria?
Wondering about where to go and what to see in beautiful Italia? Worried you’ll be surrounded by tourists and line ups the entire time?
If it’s your first trip to La Bella Italia, or you’ve been to Italy many times, consider exploring Umbria.
Umbria offers you an escape from the crowds of tourists, the pushy vendors and feeling rushed from each attraction to the next. It’s a quiet beautiful region tucked between Rome and Florence; the perfect spot to discover central Italy.
I believe the best Italian holiday is with Italians, not tourists.
Here at Katy in Umbria you’ll find inspiration for your holiday, concrete plans for visiting, and tips for deciding what is best for your holiday.
Why do I write about Umbria? Because I’ve fallen in love with the region of Umbria and want to share this beautiful spot in Italy you. The contrast to all the crowds in Rome or Florence is a breath of fresh air.
I’ve been living here full time since 2013 with my Umbrian husband. And I’m here to help you, whether you’re simply deciding on a restaurant, getting the kinks ironed out of your itinerary, or just curious about why Umbria is worth a visit.
What travelers are saying:
‘I am grateful for your recommendations. Thank you!’ Dvora
‘Thanks for such a nice article – we will be spending a week in Perugia and I plan to use your article to base our trip in Perugia. Will be visiting the towns and cities you mentioned’ Andrew
Imagine your Italian holiday exploring the Umbrian countryside.
What does a holiday in Umbria mean for you?
You’ll explore towns full of ruins from the ancient Romans. Or visit an 11th century church in rural Umbria with the only other person there arranging flowers for the next service.
That you can take a stroll along the shore of Lake Trasimeno and only see two older gentlemen sitting on a park bench.
The lack of crowds means that you can go to a favourite restaurant without reservations. You’ll meet restaurant owners proud of their local, seasonal ingredients. They’ll prepare your meal just like an Italian mother does.
And if you encounter the occasional crowd? They’re mostly Umbrians, or Italians, coming to celebrate the freshly pressed olive oil, or next year’s wine.
Why I write about holidays in Umbria
Back in 2004, when I first met my ‘to be’ husband in England, I had never heard of his home town, Perugia, in Umbria. We married in 2014, and I’ve called Umbria home ever since.
With each friend and family member who comes to visit, Umbria is a destination for a relaxing holiday. And the quantity and quality of art, wilderness, and food all help. You could say it’s Tuscany without the crowds.
I came to realise how special and spacious Umbria is, and you can too. When you come for a relaxing holiday in the ancient region of Umbria.
You won’t regret a stop in Umbria:
- Getting wrapped up in the olive groves, vineyards and oak forests full of black truffles that cover Umbria.
- Wandering through the small medieval hilltop towns are laced with art from centuries past.
- Sipping a cappuccino, or a glass of wine, in a piazza and letting the warm Italian sunlight warm your soul.
